Did you know?

Out of the population of disabled children in the world , over 10 percent or living in the easter and southern section of Africa. The high percentage of discrimination towards the disabled person, especially the young are subdued to harsh treatment and type-casted. Not only is this conducted in the society , it is commonly accepted and the need to break this cycle of social acceptance falls needs the participation of everyone in the communities. The children are not seen as or treated as a important member of society and are quite simply brushed aside and have no protection in human rights and unfairly looked down upon. They will not have future opportunities to employment or have no access to education as they are seen as beings of less equality. The harsh realities can be seen in plane sight of many disabled children being left to fend for themselves and abandoned by their families due to shame and not being valuable member to their communities.

Governments are being called upon to take more of a responsibility and promote better social awareness and protection towards the disabled children of Africa.

According to Christine ,  a young Ugandan woman, is the Executive Director of the Ugandan Association of Cerebral Palsy. Christine tells us that young people living with disabilities face tremendous challenges to access services like education, “We all know that education is the backbone of economic development but persons with disabilities are left behind. Governments need to remove barriers to education….Education is for all, regardless of level and type of disability.”

Christine continues to say, “This kills our dreams. Today, I am living with my family member and I am not empowered. I think about what will happen when my family member is no longer there.”
